Two decades on, Blood Mountain still stands as one of prog metal's most delightfully unhinged moments; the band really did swing for the fences with that one. It's the kind of album that rewards repeated listens precisely because Mastodon weren't content to play it safe, and that adventurous spirit is exactly what keeps heavy music interesting. Plenty of our listeners came of age with this record, so hearing the lads reflect on how they made something this ambitious feels like a proper milestone worth marking.
